I undestand that in the gospels it states two completely diffrent things. I believe, leaning from the pastor and my mother, that one if of what man has written on his own accord and the other is what Jesus had man write. I am not very sure on this but that is what I gather. I will go more in detail when I have the time.

Peace:

Actually, according to Christian theology, the Bible is all suppose to be inspired by God. So, no, one cannot be accepted as man's own writing because this would totally destroy the idea that the bible was divinely inspired, from the Christian perspective. However, as Muslim's, we do believe the bible was written by man which is why there are errors and contradictions, so it proves that point. You have to remember, that absolutely nothing was written in the life-time of Jesus, pbuh, and these unknown authors of the bible were not eye nor ear witnesses to His life and teachings.

The authors of the synoptic gospels used the same sources or documents to write and some copied, word for word, off others. Too bad there wasn't a Gospel according to Jesus, pbuh. I would love to see something like that. Although I don't ever recall reading where He requested the preservation of His teachigs through writing, IF there had been such a document in existance at one time, it has long since been lost or destroyed without ever have been recorded in history. We know this because there is absolutely no reference to it in any of the books of the bible and nothing noted or found in any old manuscripts. And there are plenty of cross references to other books that have never been found, so for sure this would also have been referenced.

So, most definitely, the contradictions found in the bible are there because man is not perfect and in his attempt to alter text, he neglected other parts of the bible that cross-reference back to the altered verses.

And the question begs to be asked, "If you believe the bible contains added material from man, who or what exactly are you following? Man or the true teachings of Jesus, pbuh, that was revealed to Him directly from God? And how can you hope to decipher what is man-made and what is God inspired? This is the problem.

Peace,
Hana

Yes for all you have said is true but really. The Bible was written entirly by man what, 30 years after Jesus' death?
The bible was written by the deciples of Christ and other followers. There are many contradictions and I posted some of them on a web forum for christians. They say that it all misinterpretation of the verses. Which, if you reada over them and have a little knowledge of the bible, you would see that it is a misinterpretation.

Peace Seth:

Nice to see you back :)

Well, actually, there is a lot of disagreement over the timeline of the writing of the Gospels, but whether they were written by the disciples is really unlikely. Paul, who was never taught by Jesus, pbuh, seems to have the earliest writings attributed to him starting around 50 CE, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were not disciples of Christ either and in fact, the authorship of their gospels is unknown. Those gospels have been dated by the majority of sources from about 70 CE to 150 CE and later. Mark was written in Greek, not the language spoken by Jesus, pbuh and His disciples, which was Aramaic, and dated from 80 CE to 100 CE. Matthew was also written in the same time period and in Greek. Luke dated from 80-100 CE and John dated from 90-150 CE (although more agreement is from 90-120 CE) and both written in Greek.

It is believed the synoptics used the same sources for compiling information and one unknown/unfound document referred to as Q. John, differs dramatically from the synoptics and it is believed the author is writing from oral tradition (stories passed down from generations), and none written by direct eye/ear witnesses to the events of the life of Jesus, pbuh.

I have to agree that some of the contradictions in the Bible are copyist errors. Particularly with numbers which, when looked at closely from the oldest manuscripts and how they were translated, you can see how it can happen. However, that doesn't explain most of the errors, additions and/or deletions. These errors were made by man and it was well known that both early Jews and Christians manipulated text for a variety of reasons and burned the ones they copied from. Very unfortunate for sure. Then you have the Romans that found and destroyed sooooo many early manuscripts that at the time the Gospels were written, there was virtually none left to use as resources.

So, what's left? Stories passed from generations of oral tradition, unknown authorship, no eye/ear witnesses, no original manuscripts to allow us to go back to the source, and the oldest manuscripts translated into Greek and Latin, from their original language. As we've already seen, many errors and misunderstandings happen when translating from language to language, let alone not having the original source to correct the errors.

Hope this makes sense. :)

Peace,
Hana

Yes it did and I'm rather suprised that I didn't realize trhis before.
The mistakes also came from the translation of the bible in itself, just thought i would add that.

:bism:

There is this question about Mary Magdalene. Is Mary Magdalene Jesus's wife? I wanted to know whether this is true. As I believe Jesus hadn't even marry to anyone.
