Types of Hajj :

There are three types of Hajj: tamattu’, qiraan and ifraad

Tamattu’ means entering ihraam for ‘Umrah during the months of Hajj – which are Shawwaal, Dhu’l-Qa’dah and the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah – and finishing ‘umrah, then entering ihraam for Hajj in the same year.

Qiraan means entering ihraam for ‘umrah and Hajj together, for which he says “Labbayka ‘umratan wa Hajjan (here I am, O Allaah, for ‘Umrah and Hajj),” then the pilgrim does not exit ihraam until the Day of Sacrifice, or he enters ihraam for ‘umrah then he decides to include Hajj with it before he starts tawaaf for ‘umrah.

Ifraad is when the pilgrim enters ihraam from the meeqaat, or from Makkah if he lives there, or from somewhere else that is closer than the meeqaat, then he remains in ihraam until the Day of Sacrifice, if he has a sacrificial animal with him. If he does not have a sacrificial animal with him, then it is prescribed for him to cancel his Hajj and make it ‘Umrah, so he should do tawaaf and saa’i, and cut his hair, and exit ihraam, as the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) instructed those who had entered ihraam for Hajj but did not have sacrificial animals with them. The same applies to the pilgrim doing Qiraan – if he does not have a sacrificial animal with him, it is prescribed for him to cancel his Qiraan and make it ‘Umrah, for the reasons mentioned.

The pilgrim who is doing Ifraad should do the same as the pilgrim who is doing Qiraan, except that the one who is doing Qiraan has to offer a sacrifice, whereas the one who is doing Ifraad does not have to offer a sacrifice.

The best of these three types of Hajj is Tamattu’, which is what the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined upon his companions and urged them to do, to such an extent that if a person has entered ihraam for Qiraan or Ifraad, he may change his ihraam to ‘Umrah then exit ihraam so that he will be doing Tamattu’, even if that is after doing tawaaf al-qudoom and saa’i, because when the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had done tawaaf and saa’i in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, and his companions were with him, he ordered everyone who did not have a sacrificial animal with him to change his ihraam to ‘Umrah and cut his hair and exit ihraam, and he said: Were it not that I have brought the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done what I have told you to do.” Agreed upon.
